FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about Obscure Glass

1. What is obscure art glass?
Obscure glass is glass that lets light but no visibility through it. The glass surface on at least one side is not smooth and bends or diffuses light rays.  It is sometimes called "patterned" glass or "privacy" glass.

2. In what thickness is obscure glass available?
Obscure glass is available from a variety of manufacturers and thickness. Common thickness are 3mm (1/8"), 4mm and 6mm.

3. What makes one obscure glass preferable to another?

The three variables of importance in selecting an obscure glass are:

   a) Thickness, which relates to sheet strength;
   b) Degree of visibility/obscurity (see the DG visibility comparisons);
   c) Suitability of the specific pattern in the glass for the use considered.

4. How does the price of obscure glass compare in price to other forms of art glass?
Obscure glass by itself is several times more expensive than float (flat) glass, but that is much less expensive than other forms of art glass. A single sheet of obscure glass is monotonous, so usually several different patterns are combined into a leaded glass design. The price for this artwork approaches that of traditional stained glass because of the labor involved, but the raw glass material is less expensive.
