Stained
Glass Restoration
| The
Service:

|
We
distinguish "restoration" as different from "repair"
where there is interest in preserving the original design and materials of
a historically significant art piece. We examine your stained glass panel at our
studio or your stained glass window or door at
your residence, discuss with you alternative restoration strategies, and prepare the free estimate
of the cost to restore. This estimate is
based on your priority choices for the following restoration strategies:
-
Replacing broken pieces
with matching glass.
-
Edge-gluing
broken pieces back together.
-
Gluing
broken pieces to a clear substrate to hold them together.
- When matching
glass is not available, also replacing
some non-broken pieces so that
there is a symmetric balance to the new
glass.
- Leaving minor breaks alone.
- Concealing glass breaks with new lead
lines.
- Re-soldering broken lead
joints.
- Adding strengthening with
reinforcement bars.
- Re-leading
when the lead has deteriorated.
- Re-puttying.
- Adding an "aged patina" to
repairs to blend with the old look of the entire piece.

| The
Benefits:
|
Your
glass is professionally restored to look
very close to "as good as new." All
modifications are performed with
with the intent of preserving the original as much as possible within the
owner's guidelines and budget. Our customers are frequently very surprised that they cannot find
evidence of the pre-restoration problems!
|
| The
Cost:
|
The
cost is driven by the extent of the restoration required. Frequently
additional problems are discovered during restoration. (For example,
in the 4 Art Deco doors illustrated, several dozen lead breaks were
estimated to be repaired, but after cleaning, it was discovered that there
were several hundred solder breaks!) |
